Abstract

Using a nationally representative sample of 897 low-income elderly women living alone in South Korea from the Korean Welfare Panel Study, this study aimed to examine the association between material hardship and life satisfaction, with particular attention to the mediating role of self-esteem in the association. The findings of this study are as follows. First, experiencing material hardship was associated with lower levels of life satisfaction among low-income elderly women living alone. Second, among individual items of material hardship, experiencing food insecurity or credit problems was associated with lower levels of life satisfaction. Third, self-esteem partially mediated the association between material hardship and life satisfaction. Material hardship among low-income elderly women living alone was negatively associated with their self-esteem and, in turn, with their life satisfaction. Based on the findings, practice and policy implications for improving the quality of life among low-income elderly women living alone were discussed.
